The IT department strongly recommends that every computer that accesses the network and internet has anti-virus software installed. UNR-owned computers are automatically protected by Microsoft Forefront. However, it is your responsibility to ensure that your personally-owned computer is also protected.
We suggest that you use the following, free, anti-virus software:
- Windows 10 users have Windows Security installed by default on their computer. It works to actively protect your computer from the moment you start Windows 10.
- Apple Mac computers may use Avast! for Mac or any other highly-recommended anti-virus software.
- It is a myth that Macs do not get malware and viruses. The increased number of Macs being used has also increased the amount of malicious code being developed to target those specific computers.
What if I'm already infected?
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (MBAM) is a useful tool for performing standalone scans when you're already infected. In our tests, MBAM has found and removed most infections when they were already affecting the computer.
Please note: When installing MBAM, please read the installation instructions carefully. It is possible to accidentally install a trial of the full, paid, version of the software rather than the free version that has no expiry date.
Need more help?
The specialists at the Computing Help Desk, on the second floor of the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center, scan for, and remove, infections on a daily basis. Feel free to bring your personal computer to this location for advice and assistance on removing malicious software. Alternatively, although we can't send a technician out to assist with a personally-owned computer, you may get advice by contacting OIT Support.
