It is necessary to limit access to some of the wireless network to efficiently utilize our wireless capabilities. The networking resources provided by UNR OIT are to be used primarily for academic purposes. Therefore, your affiliation with the University can affect the type of resources you will be able to access via the Wi-fi signal.
Students and Guests
Students accessing eduroam or UNR-IOT, and guests accessing UNR-Guest may only use the wireless signal to access websites, web-based email, SSH, SFTP, and use academic software (Such as Remote Services). For most, this will be sufficient. Others may find that the following systems do not work:
Email Clients
- While on campus, it is necessary to use your email provider's webmail system instead of using Outlook, Thunderbird, Mac Mail, or any other email client.
Online Games
- Online games, such as Fortnite or League of Legends, use a vast amount of bandwidth while they are being played. Allowing you to use these games online would impede the academic use of the network for others at the University. Additionally, these games often require large exceptions to be made in the firewall (League of Legends calls for 100 exceptions to be made). Opening these ports up on the firewall leaves us vulnerable to attack from malicious people and bots.
Faculty and Staff
Employees of the University do not have many restrictions over the wireless network. We understand how important it is for you to be able to access the resources for you teaching, research and career, and therefore trust you to use the access we provide responsibly.
