University of Nevada, Reno Student Technology Agreement

This University of Nevada, Reno Student Technology Agreement (“Agreement”) is between the Board of Regents of the Nevada System of Higher Education on behalf of the University of Nevada, Reno (“the University”) and the University student whose name appears on the final page of the Agreement (“Student”).  This Agreement specifies the rights and responsibilities of the Student and of the University and provides Student important information about policies that govern the use of technology owned and managed by the University.

Sole use of the technology, loss, theft, damage

Student has been issued a University-owned iPad and related software and/or mobile applications (apps), an Apple Smart Keyboard, related cords and/or chargers, and an Apple Pen (all, collectively, “the Technology”)  for Student’s sole use and benefit as a learning tool while actively enrolled as a student at the University of Nevada, Reno. In consideration of being issued the Technology, Student agrees and accepts the following responsibilities and conditions for so long as the Technology is issued to Student:

  • The use of the Technology is a privilege that can be revoked. Inappropriate use or neglect of the Technology can result in limits to or loss of use of the Technology and/or University resources.
  • Student agrees to and shall take care of and protect the Technology.
  • Student shall not sell, give away, or otherwise transfer the Technology in any way to any person or entity. Student is responsible for any and all use of the Technology.
  • Student agrees and acknowledges that if any of the Technology is lost or stolen, University will not issue additional Technology to Student.
  • In the event of loss of any of the Technology, Student shall immediately file a report of loss with University Police Service by calling 775-334-COPS (775-334-2677) or file a report online at unr.edu/police.
  • In the event of theft, Student shall immediately file a report with University Police Service calling 775-334-COPS (775-334-2677) or file a report online at unr.edu/Police.
  • In the event that Student reports the Technology as lost or stolen or the University has reasonable cause to believe the Technology is no longer in Student’s possession and/or control, the University may render the Technology nonfunctional and may activate the built-in tracking mechanism (“Lost Mode”) to support recovery of the Technology.
  • If the iPad is damaged, Student will be financially responsible for the repair or replacement of the iPad, unless the University approves a financial hardship waiver. The iPad is supported by a period of AppleCare+ coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damage. The cost for repair or replacement in the event of accidental damage under this Agreement is $49 (plus applicable tax), limited to two repairs per year over the initial four years of AppleCare+ coverage. To confirm the AppleCare+ coverage of the Technology, visit checkcoverage.apple.com.
  • If the Apple Pencil or Apple Smart Keyboard is damaged, Student will be financially responsible for the repair or replacement of the Apple Pencil or Apple Smart Keyboard, unless the University approves a financial hardship waiver. The Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard are supported by a period of AppleCare+ coverage for both manufacturer defects and accidental damage. The cost for repair or replacement in the event of accidental damage under this Agreement is $29 (plus applicable tax) limited to two repairs per year over the initial four years of AppleCare+ coverage. Appropriate use

  • The Technology is issued to Student for Student’s educational use in Student’s courses, for course-related work, and for managing other student life and university-related activities (e.g., registering for classes, participating in University clubs, managing Student’s accounts, etc.). Personal use of the technology is permitted.
  • Student is solely responsible for the use of the Technology. The University’s Student Code of Conduct and University and Board of Regents policies apply to Student’s use of the Technology. The Student Code of Conduct is available at unr.edu/student-conduct/university-policies/student-code-of-conduct and University policies are available at unr.edu/administrative-manual, and The Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents policies are available at nshe.nevada.edu/leadership-policy/board-of-regents/handbook.
  • Student shall not engage in illegal activity using the Technology.
  • University requires and Student acknowledges, agrees to, and shall use a 6-character passcode for the iPad. Student shall enable device encryption and shall set the screen to lock after a period of inactivity.
  • Student shall ensure Student’s data is safe and secure in the event that the Technology becomes corrupted, must be reset or replaced, or is lost. The University provides secure file storage for this purpose. The University is not responsible for backing up the data on the Technology.
  • Student shall ensure that Student’s addresses and secondary contact information are up to date in MyNevada in the event the University must ship Technology or contact Student regarding the Technology.
  • Student shall not remove or alter any of the identification tags attached to or displayed on the Technology. Service and support are contingent on proper display of the identification tags.
  • The iPad is enrolled in the University’s Mobile Device Management (MDM) service in order to provide a reliable experience for Student and to enhance security in compliance with University policies. Student can view details of the MDM profile at “Settings > General > Profiles & Device Management” on the iPad at any time. Other settings not listed above are Apple/iOS system defaults displayed for information only. Student shall be informed if any aspects of the MDM are changed.
  • Student shall not attempt to bypass or remove MDM or other functionality established by the University (including, but not limited to, “rooting” or “jailbreaking” the Technology). In the event Student attempts to bypass or remove MDM or other functionality established by the University, the Technology will be remotely reset to its original configuration or disabled and rendered nonfunctional, with potential loss of data or apps.  The University  may also require Student to return the Technology.
  • Student shall prevent bypass or removal of the MDM, including user-initiated factory reset of the iPad or non-university management profiles.
  • Student shall not install software in any manner other than through the App Store. Installing software in any manner other than through the App Store is prohibited. Student tethering an iPad to a Mac running Xcode for the purpose of app development is permitted.
  • It is illegal to copy or distribute any software loaned to Student by the University. Student shall not copy, forward, or otherwise distribute, in any manner, any of the University’s confidential information on the Technology.
  • From time-to-time, the University pushes new apps, operating system and app updates to Student’s Technology. Student shall keep Student’s iPad and apps up-to-date for the best experience. Student acknowledges that each app has its own privacy policy that explains how personal and other information is collected, used, shared and secured.
  • Student acknowledges and agrees that the University shall push university-purchased or approved apps and digital assets (such as eBooks) to the iPad, make apps and digital assets available via “Self-Service,” and list the apps installed on Student’s iPad.
  • Student acknowledges and agrees that the University shall distribute to Student’s iPad software updates and related notifications to protect against vulnerabilities.

  • If Student withdraws or transfers from the University, Student shall return the Technology to the University within 15 calendar days of the University’s notice to return the Technology. Failure to return the Technology may result in the Technology being remotely reset to the original configuration or disabled and rendered nonfunctional.  In the event Student fails to return the Technology, Student may be billed for the cost of the Technology.
  • Upon Student’s successful completion of and graduation from Student’s undergraduate program at the University of Nevada, Reno, the University will transfer ownership of the Technology to Student. When Student graduates  from the University, University will inform Student how to continue using the apps and the information they contain, and back up and transfer Student’s  content from apps that were provided via active University enrollment.
  • In the event the University transfers ownership of the Technology to Student, the University will remove all management, including Mobile Device Management service and any apps owned by the University. It is necessary for the device to be reset to its factory state for complete removal from the MDM. Within 40 calendar days after Student’s graduation, the University shall  fully process and disown the iPad.
