An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a series of numbers that OIT Technicians use to figure out where on a network your computer is located. It is useful for our technicians to know your IP address so that they can promptly diagnose any network issues that you may be having.
Finding Your Computer's IP Address on a PC
The following are instructions for finding your IP address on Windows 10.
- On your keyboard, press the Win Key and the r at the same time to bring up the Run Dialog Box.
- In the window that appears in the bottom-left hand corner of your screen, type in cmd and click OK.
- The command prompt window will appear, with white text on a black background. In this window, type ipconfig and press enter.
- A long list of information will appear. Look for the heading that begins Ethernet adapter (when connected via Ethernet to the network) or Wireless LAN Adapter (If you are on the wireless network). In the detail below that heading, look for IPv4 Address. The number to the right of that heading is your IP Address.
Finding Your Computer's IP Address on a Mac
The following are instructions for finding the IP Address on a Mac.
- Click on the Network icon from the tool bar at the top of the screen and select Open Network Preferences…
- In the window that appears, make sure your method of connection (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) is selected from the options on the left. The IP Address is then listed in the box on the right.
