Microsoft Basic Authentication Deprecation

Body

Beginning on October 1, 2022 Microsoft will end support for Basic Authentication methods.  This change will affect how Microsoft applications connect to various Office 365 tools.  Modern Authentication will take is place which utilizes authentication tokens instead of a users username and password. Modern Authentication is vastly more secure and allows for the use of Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

What does this change mean?

If you were using an application that was connecting via Basic Authentication you will lose access to the account on that device starting Oct 1, 2022.  This may include up to date applications that were configured to use Basic Authentication even though they support Modern Authentication.  For these systems, you need only remove your email profile from the device and re-add it using the correct authentication method.

Communications have been sent to users who are currently connecting via Basic Authentication. If you have received a notification please note that we do not have detailed information about which devices are using Basic Authentication so make sure to update all of your devices.

What are my next steps?

For many users, the resolution will be to remove and re-add your email profile to your device. Note that removing an email profile does not delete your email or calendar items, as they are stored on the server, it simply changes the connection method.
